There have been more then a few people that have canceled travel plans to Japan due to their new policy of fingerprinting all foreigners who enter the country. As it turns out the biometric fingerprinting system is not very difficult to defeat. In what is no doubt a massive fail for the Japanese program it is now being reported that a simple piece of tape placed on the finger is enough to by pass the security system.
A South Korean woman who worked as a ‘hostess’ in a Nagano bar was labeled person non grata by the Japanese in 2007. She managed to obtain a false passport in South Korea and used the tape on her fingers to bypass Japanese customs.
This flaw although embarrassing will most likely be sealed up with greater vigilance on the part of customs agents. Although its likely this security hole will be plugged this wont be the last time that a method of defeating biometric systems appear, next time instead of tape it might be a past. As long as their are Koreans working as hostesses in Japan they will find ways to enter the country.
