South Korea launched its second AEGIS KDX-III destroyer Friday. The ships have been named after Korea’s greatest king, a total of 6 7,600 ton KDX-III Sejong the Great-class destroyers will be built. The ships are being built at the Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering yard on Geoje Island in South Gyeongsang. The destroyers have an estimated range of 5,500 nautical miles and can travel at speeds greater then 30 knots. A crew of 3oo - 400 men keep the ship running, additional features include two Super Lynx MK99 helicopters, SAM missiles, torpedoes, and one MK-45 DP gun.
The most impressive feature of Korea’s new destroyers is its advanced Aegis command and control system. The Aegis system is used by only five countries in the world the United States, Spain, Korean, Japan, and Norway. It is the worlds first fully integrated combat system that can defend against surface, air, and subsurface threats.
The ships launch is timely, rumors of a power vacuum, and questions over the health of Kim Jong-Il have lead North Korea to lash out by severing diplomatic channels. A little South Korean saber rattling to remind the North how antiquated their military is my not be a bad idea.
