UMPC’s with embedded GPS like the Samsung Q1 have always been a great accessory for the car, while its not for everyone having a large navigation unit with some computing power is great for businesses or business travelers. All the drinking Korean business men do, combined with frequent roadside breathalyzer tests make UMID’s F1 UMPC the perfect computer for cars.
UMID was in the news a couple days ago for their vaporous looking paperback sized netbook, but this device looks like it has a better chance of seeing stores. The F1 runs on a VIA C7-M 1.2GHz processor, comes with either 512MB or 1GB of RAM, and also included your choice of a 30GB or 60GB hard drive. The device will keep you connected with WiBro, HSPDA, Bluetooth 2.0, GPS, DMB, and a FM tuner. The display is a 7″ 800 x 480 LCD touchscreen.
Its does not look nearly as shiny in real life but it looks like UMID is on to something here. UMID has made it easy to upgrade the hard drive and other pieces, but choosing to go with a hard drive rather then flash may lead to serious problems with performance while driving. We will be keeping our eye on UMID’s rise from obscurity.
