Mintpass was founded after one of iriver’s founder and CEO left with a core group of engineers and designers to form a new company. It took Mintpass awhile to get their legs and many pundits began to write them off. However , today Mintpass has finally released their Mintpad messenger.
The Mintpad is a bit of a mash up between a PMP and instant messneger device. Beside its stylish minimalist design its main feature is the ability to write and send handwritten notes to other Mintpad users. The Mintpad also has a 3″ 320 x 240 color LCD touch screen with support for web browsing (via Wi-Fi), photos, and video playback. Also included is 4 GB internal memory with MicroSD slot, a built in 1.3 megapixel camera, and a speaker/microphone. It all runs on a ARM9 400Mhz CPU, 125MB SDRAM, and Windows CE 5.0 Professional.
The device looks great and the ability to send handwritten messages is a fresh feature. It will no doubt go over well with school children looking for a novel way to pass notes in class and out. However, in a country over saturated with PMP’s, cell phones, and other web communication devices where does the Mintpad fit in? If you can only send the handwritten messages to other Mintpass users there is not much incentive for early adapters of the device. Its hard to predict how the Korean market will receive the new Mintpass, time will tell. The Mintpass is available in Korea for 198,000W ($156 USD).
