Perhaps sensing an over saturation in the market for useful robotics, researchers from Chonnam National University have developed a robotic plant. Much like traditional low cost, low maintenance, natural, abundant plants the robot plant can produce oxygen, emits aromas (hopefully pleasant ones), and does some sort of humidifying thing.
Since robotic plants obviously need some extra features to steal market share away from real plants the researchers enabled the plant to respond to a variety of stimuli. When a person comes within 40cm of the faux plant its stems will lean towards the visitor and its flowers will bloom. The plant will also bloom when its spoken two, and shake to greet you. If you don’t feel silly enough yet, play some music, the plant will dance. This thing even aims to imitate photosynthesis, as the buds open and close according to lighting conditions.
Although robotic plants have been floating around in toy form for awhile, this definitely ups the ante. Will this robot-plant future involve a world over run by terminator style venus fly traps or a more peaceful FernGully utopia?
