Samsung Electronics has announced the release of the worlds smallest hard drive. The new SpinPoint N2 comes in at 1.8” HD (about the size of a credit card). The SpinPoint N2 can store more than 40,000 MP3 files or 100 HD quality movies. It spins at 4200rpm with read and write speeds of 27MB/s and 23MB/s, respectively.
Sasmung’s other models include a 40GB, 60GB, 80GB and 120GB capacity hard drives that will retail for $161, $191, $235 and $293, respectively. The Spinpoint N2 also strives to be environmentally friendly by reducing its power consumption to only one-fourth that of standard 2.5″ drives. The 120GB version of Spinpoint N2 will cost around $293 USD, but to date has only been released in China. Compared to the going rate for a 320GB USB 2.5″ drive which retails around $120, the reduction in size will cost you.
