At SID 2008, LG unveiled a reflective LCD panel that can display different images on the front and back sides of the glass substrate. The Dual sided panel eliminates the need for backlight and gives higher visibility outdoors, which makes them ideal for mobile devices.
LG prototyped 2.2-inch and 15-inch LCD panels. Both prototype panels feature a reflectivity of 20%. The 2.2-inch panel has a resolution of 160 x 120 and 15-inch display has a resolution of 2048 x 1536. The dual LCD panels adopts a display method based on birefringence (the decomposition of one light ray into two rays), which is used for standard reflective and semi-transmissive LCD panels.
