3rd Generation Q1 UMPC From Samsung

Q1 owners and enthusiasts rejoice, a Samsung rep has announced the release of a next generation Q1 UMPC device in the first quarter of next year (just in time for CES 2009). Samsung has kept its commitment to bring new innovations to the UMPC concept that they launched in 2006. In what is called the third generation of their Q1, the company is planning to refresh the design and upgrade its performance.
Throughout 2007, Samsung sold approximately 100,000 units of Q1 and Q1 Ultra to mostly education related customers in Korea, the US, UK, Italy, and China, which makes the Q1 a market leader with a 65% share of the UMPC market.
It will be interesting to see how the new Q1 is going to fare against Eee PC’s and Intel’s Atom bases UMPC’s. Without a doubt the Q1 best serves the high end of the UMPC market, will the average consumer expect the full functionality of of a PC or except less features on an unfamiliar operating system for the benefit of a lower cost? To date Samsung has show little interest in a ‘race to the bottom’ with PC manufactures.
