Samsung ‘Game Phone’ Patent Surfaces

02.19.08 | Comment?

The patent may call it a ‘portable terminal having game function’, but it looks an awful lot like a cell phone. Samsung has filed a patent for their ‘mobile device’ with a pretty slick set of controls and a screen that slides out for some wide screen entertainment.

While technology and gaming blogs buzzed about a possible gaming phone from Samsung few took the time to properly interpret the patent for what it is. Samsung like Nokia and Sony are keeping up to date on gaming controls for their phones should they ever decide to make one. It does not necessarily mean they are actively pursuing a gaming phone, if we see another gaming phone released anytime soon it will likely be another N-gage. As the patent states, aside from the game friendly controls and screen can be used for multimedia entertainment such as music and video.

No doubt a design like this would make snake and Tetris games easier to play, but its unlikely Samsung will be ushering in a new era of mobile gaming with this patent.
