The Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) have worked with three other universities and several private companies to develop the Ubiquitous Fashionable Computer [Video]. Essentially a wearable computer installed in a jacket, enabling its user to not only perform regular computing tasks on the go but also giving them the opportunity to play fun Nintendo Wii style games.
The jacket’s computer uses an Intel PXA270 processor with 128MB of RAM, and 32MB of NOR as well as 128MB of NAND flash memory. The jacket has a camera, GPS, two USB hosts, two microphones, and a 2.5″ LCD display. The jacket also includes the iThrow gesture recognition device, WLAN, Bluetooth, and ZigBee. The software is run of the Linux 2.6.10 Kernal.
The standard term ‘wearable computer’ might have been a better choice then ‘fashionable computer’, although the jackets dont look that bad don’t expect too many compliments if your sporting their lime green edition. The Ubiquitous Fashionable Computer is currently only a research project. Although, the idea of wearing electronics has always appealed to a large number of individuals so its possible this jacket or another like it may one day grace our electronics stores. Until then everyone will just have to use their pockets.
