Samsung showcased their brand new 32GB NAND flash-based solid state disk (SSD) in a thick pained glass showcase at this years KES.
So what is flash memory and why should you care? For starters the flash memory has no moving parts unlike a traditional hard drive saving on space and power consumption while boosting the read and write speed. For example, the SSD writes 300% faster, and reads 150% faster then normal hard drives. Windows XP will boot up 25-50% quicker.
The SSD is also more resistant to a bit of abuse, it can take twice as much external shocks as a regular hard drive. This will come in handy for those butter fingers who are prone to dropping their notebooks. It also weighs slightly less, and operates virtually silent compared to a regular hard drive.
The 32GB flash memory revolution has already begun. Samsung released a Samsung Q1 UMPC, and Q30 Notebook in June of 2006.
